Maroubra beach

Maroubra is claimed to be a locals beach but there weren't many 'locals' enjoying the fine winter weather or crisp waves. Australia's second national surfing reserve has some of the best waves to found in Sydney. Maroubra is an Aboriginal word meaning 'like thunder'. The area was first settled in 1861 and slowly developed in the 1870s as more arrived to work in the wool scouring works. photo: will sherman
